CHAPTER 10

“It is happening” Owen said as he rushed inside to get John. The King had put Owen in charge of training him to fight with his construct among the dragon horde, once John was through then he would be put into rotation guarding the princess. John had been living with Owen for the last month and had seen the clutch of five eggs almost every day, Owen had men keep the eggs wrapped in hot towels every hour. John was happy to see his friend excited and went out to see the action, his son Oren was there as well trying to see past Frost who paced nervously around her eggs. There was a crack in one of them that got wider until a small snout stuck out of it, Owen gasped and John could see why. A small speckled snout poked out of the egg then an entire face. Frost used one of her claws to rip a small piece of the shell off as the speckled dragon forced itself out the egg.

“Get away Oren!” Owen shouted. “Don’t let the Speckled get too close to you, you already have a guaranteed dragon. Stay away until we see the rest of them.”

John watched them all hatch and Owen was a lucky man. The Speckled turned out to be a female which gave Owen the problem of who he could bond the dragon with. The other four dragons were an orange dragon who was said to be intelligent enough to speak. One red dragon, one blue dragon and a white dragon. The white dragon was a runt, it looked near death and barely made it out of the egg. Owen had his excitement focused on Oren, the Red instantly took to him and spent time between Oren and its mother. John stayed focused on the small white, the others were the size of a decent sized dog but the white was about as big as a small cat. John chewed up food and sat with the dragon all night trying to get it to eat, its mother Frost ignored it and put her attention into the other four. John slept with the baby white that night, it had ragged breathing but stayed nestled up with him until morning.

In the morning John woke up to do his exercises and could feel the dragon was still alive. Instead of exercising John covered it with hot towels and coaxed it to eat a little. It was mid-morning when Owen came looking for him and had a look of pity on his face.

“That one is not going to make it” Owen said. “It is the way of dragons, runts rarely survive. Even Frost abandoned it.”

“This little guy is going to make it” John said as he rubbed the dragon’s head.

“You are putting off the inevitable” Owen said. “But if you need a project then feel free to take care of it. She is a girl dragon; I wouldn’t name her though. I just don’t want you to get hurt.
